In 1973, Kirsten Hofstätter published the first book on "chicken knitting" with the aim of uniting women in the craft, providing the opportunity to send messages through knitting, adding more colour to knitting, freeing up patterns from buying yarn and much more. For her, it was a definite knitting manifesto.

Hønsestrik, translated as "hen knitting" or "chicken knitting", is a type of stranded colourwork that uses bright colour combinations and often incorporates political or cultural symbols and is intended as a form of radical craft activism.

In this modern book about chicken knitting, knitting designer Hanne Rimmen has reinterpreted chicken knitting into 2025 with an entire pattern library, colour theory, techniques and a lot of contemporary designs with chicken knitting. A tribute to the chicken coop and the revival of a unique women's story.
