Have you been dying to cast on that project you’ve had saved in your favourites folder… but just can’t start it until you learn Brioche? Here’s your moment to level-up and learn those skills once and for all! 

This class has been designed as a 3-session course to not only teach you the technique, but most importantly, to make you confident and independent with all projects "brioche."

Skill Level: Intermediate

Pre-Requisites: Cast on, knit, purl, yarnover, SSK, k2tog, knitting in the round  - using circular needles

Class Dates & Details: This class is 3 sessions offered on the following dates:

  • Saturday, November 9th and 16th (1-3pm), and November 23rd (1-4pm)
  • Sunday, November 10th and 17th (1-3pm), and November 24th (1-4pm)
  • Saturday, January 4th and Sunday, January 5th (1-3pm), and Saturday, January 11th (1-4pm)

Techniques Covered:

In Session 1, you’ll learn the absolute basics of Brioche (1 colour, flat) as follows:

  • Flat brioche knit stitch
  • Flat brioche rib
  • Brioche increases and decreases
  • Brioche cast off
  • How to count the brioche stitches and rows
  • Stitch recognition
  • How to read a brioche chart
  • Choosing suitable yarn, needles and gauge for knitted brioche

In Session 2 you will learn how to knit 2 colour flat brioche as follows:

  • Flat 2 colour brioche knit and purl stitches
  • Flat 2 colour brioche rib
  • Brioche faux cables
  • Brioche cast off
  • How to count brioche stitches and rows
  • Stitch recognition
  • How to read brioche chart
  • How to correct brioche mistakes

In this class you’ll learn how to circularly knit the “Heartland Brioche Cowl”, a 2-colour brioche project using the following techniques:

  • Brioche knit and purl stitches using 2 colours in the round
  • Brioche rib using 2 colours in the round
  • Brioche faux cables in the round
  • Brioche increases and decreases
  • How to count brioche stitches and rounds
  • How to transition from round to round when brioche knitting  - using 2 colours of yarn
  • Stitch recognition
  • How to read a brioche chart

Required Materials Not Included (Available at The Knitting Loft):

Session 1

  • 4mm x 6-7"Double Pointed Needles minimum (no circulars or straights) Needles with good points are best suited for brioche knitting 
  • 100% Wool Worsted Weight Non-Superwash (40m or 30g)
  • Removable Stitch Markers
  • Scissors
  • Highlighter Tape or Post It Notes
  • Pen/Pencil and Note Pad

Session 2

  • 4mm x 6-7" DPNs (you will only need 2) – Needles with good points are best suited for brioche knitting
  • 2 Contrasting Colours of 100% Wool Worsted Weight Non-Superwash (approximately 40m or 30g per colour)
  • Removable Stitch Markers
  • Scissors
  • Highlighter Tape or Post It Notes
  • Pen/Pencil and Note Pad

Session 3

  • 4mm x 60cm Circular Needle – Needles with good points are best suited for brioche knitting
  • 2 Contrasting Colours of 100% Wool Worsted Weight (approximately 160m or 100g per colour)
  • Removable Stitch Marker (1)
  • Ring Stitch Markers (6)
  • Scissors
  • Highlighter Tape or Post It Notes
  • Pen/Pencil and Note Pad
